To be loved or to love?

A very sensible answer would be: To love, and to be loved. But in reality, what are the chances the amount of affection shown between the two would be equivalent? Thus, the next most sensible answer would be: To be loved. This way, you'll save on a lot on possible emotional trauma and effort to maintain the relationship. But then again, would you be together with someone just because you realise he/she is totally smitten with you? Difficult, no?

But actually, what's wrong with "to love, and to be loved"? Nobody says it's going to be equal anyway, since "nothing in life is fair". Having conceded that, is it better to love more, or to be loved more?
